Downton Abbey Readalikes

Have you heard about Downton Abbey? It's all the rage! It is a PBS television series which follows the lives of those at the Downton Abbey Estate - the Crawley family and the various staff members who work for them. The first season begins right after the great tragedy of the Titanic, an event which creates a crisis of inheritance amongst the Crawley family. Season 2 lets us in on how the family is affected by the Great War, while Season 3 takes us into their lives after the war, amidst great social changes and romantic drama. Below is an image of the main building featured on the television show as being part of the Downton Abbey Estate, which is actually the Highclere Castle in Hampshire, UK.
Highclere Castle (Hampshire, UK) is the main setting for Downton Abbey.
If this sounds like something you would enjoy, then perhaps you might want to try some of our Downton Abbey Readalikes, suggested by Jesse, one of our very talented librarians. She has been creating a number of wonderfully helpful Readalike bookmarks based on various authors and series, which are meant to help you find your next great read. These can be found on top of our NEW bookshelves, but just ask a Librarian for help if you cannot find them. If you have any questions contact us at (317) 852-3167 option 2, or askus@brownsburg.lib.in.us.

Great Outdoors, Dairy, and Dairy Alternatives!

Did you know that June is Great Outdoors Month? If you haven't already, find out what your community has to offer in the way of local bike and walking trails, and other outdoor activities. The B&O Trail runs through Hendricks County! Here at the library we have a set of small maps, called Ride Hendricks County, that you can ask for at the front Reference Desk. They are sorted by town, so you can figure out where you want to bike!
June is also Dairy Alternatives Month and Dairy Month-there is a celebration for everything! This month encourages you to either explore alternative foods to dairy (such as beans, nuts, almond or rice milk), or to continue on that cheese and yogurt kick! Our library features a selection of dairy, vegan and dairy-free cookbooks. Check them out! Give us a call at (317) 852-3167 option 2 if you have any questions, or e-mail us at askus@brownsburg.lib.in.us.

Adult Summer Reading Program

Yes, you read that right...there is an Adult Summer Reading Program-it's not just for kids! Friday, June 1st, from 6-8 pm is our big Summer Reading Kickoff, an event for the whole family. You can register for Summer Reading, get your picture taken in our "photobooth," listen to live music, and eat free ice cream!
For those of you who are not familiar with our Adult Summer Reading Program, here's how it works:
    1. Register for the Summer Reading Program, either a the Kickoff on June 1st or here at the library anytime thereafter.
    2. Pick up a Goal Sheet either at the Kickoff or at the library (these can be picked up anytime during the Summer Reading Program, which starts June 1st and ends July 27th).
    3. Set yourself weekly reading and library activity related goals. These can be anything you want (examples are provided on the back of the goal sheet). So, maybe your goal will be to read 360 minutes that week? And to try a new author? And to attend a library program?
    4. Once you've met those weekly goals, come on in to the library and get a raffle ticket for each goal you meet. That means, the more goals you set and meet, the more raffle tickets you get! These raffle tickets will enter you to win a prize or prizes of your choosing. And what's up for grabs?

           *Kindle Touch
           *Nook Simple Touch
*Garmin nuvi 1450 (GPS navigator for your car)
           *iPod nano
*$50 gift certificate to Hurricane Grill and $25 So Italian gift certificate

So, there is your motivation to get to the library, get registered for Summer Reading, and well...get reading!!! We hope to see you at the kickoff, and at the library throughout the Summer. Check out our events calendar for a listing of all of the great Adult programs we have to go along with our Summer Reading Program (all but 1 are FREE). Call (317) 852-3167 option 2 with any questions, or e-mail us at askus@brownsburg.lib.in.us.
