Adult Summer Reading Program

Yes, you read that right...there is an Adult Summer Reading Program-it's not just for kids! Friday, June 1st, from 6-8 pm is our big Summer Reading Kickoff, an event for the whole family. You can register for Summer Reading, get your picture taken in our "photobooth," listen to live music, and eat free ice cream!
For those of you who are not familiar with our Adult Summer Reading Program, here's how it works:
    1. Register for the Summer Reading Program, either a the Kickoff on June 1st or here at the library anytime thereafter.
    2. Pick up a Goal Sheet either at the Kickoff or at the library (these can be picked up anytime during the Summer Reading Program, which starts June 1st and ends July 27th).
    3. Set yourself weekly reading and library activity related goals. These can be anything you want (examples are provided on the back of the goal sheet). So, maybe your goal will be to read 360 minutes that week? And to try a new author? And to attend a library program?
    4. Once you've met those weekly goals, come on in to the library and get a raffle ticket for each goal you meet. That means, the more goals you set and meet, the more raffle tickets you get! These raffle tickets will enter you to win a prize or prizes of your choosing. And what's up for grabs?

           *Kindle Touch
           *Nook Simple Touch
*Garmin nuvi 1450 (GPS navigator for your car)
           *iPod nano
*$50 gift certificate to Hurricane Grill and $25 So Italian gift certificate

So, there is your motivation to get to the library, get registered for Summer Reading, and well...get reading!!! We hope to see you at the kickoff, and at the library throughout the Summer. It's That Time of Year...Garage Sale Season!

Do you enjoy the thrill of of the hunt? The sharp squeal that escapes your throat when you've finally found that gold giraffe brooch? That set of 1960's children's science books? That 1981 Schwinn World Sport? Well, then you are just as excited as I am!!

There are many reasons we each have for spending hours on a Saturday morning driving around town, sifting through other people's trash for our next treasure. No matter your reason, there are ways you can find out right where to go.

One of the first places I go is the local newspaper. If you are interested strictly in Hendricks County garage and rummage sales, visit The Flyer Classifieds. If you want to venture into Marion County, check out the Indy Star Classifieds. Craigslist is another place to search for yard sales. If you're more interested in estate sales or auctions, Estatesales.net is your starting point.

And if you're interested in books, our collection features a variety of antique and price guides. We also have an online resource called Antiques Reference, where you can search for antiques and collectibles, and even find out their recent auction history.

The above website are by no means the only resources for finding garage and estate sales. And of course, there's always my favorite method...just driving around aimlessly! Do you know anywhere else we can look? Comment below!

Celebrate Children's Book Week-Win a Book!

Did you know that May 7-13th is Children's Book Week? Established in 1919, it is the longest-running literacy initiative in the country, and gives us a chance to celebrate and promote reading and books for youth. There are many ways you can mark this momentous week, such as reading with or to your children, encouraging your teenagers to read, and visiting your local library for books and inspiration. And what might you find at Brownsburg Public Library? I'm so glad you asked!
In our Children's Department, we have a Pin the Title on the Donkey wall display, located just to the right of Character Corner (if you're not sure where this is, ask a staff member for directions). If your child pins the cover of 1of 5 books we've selected on the Donkey, they have a chance to win that book, along with a $5 Library Shop gift certificate! There will be 1 lucky winner, and we'll be taking entries through Saturday May 12th. In addition to this, we also have special coloring and activity sheets (located on the wooden table where the coloring sheets normally live), and bookmarks by the Children's Department Express Checks.

By the Customer Services Desk, you will find 2 glass displays - 1 featuring a selection of Children's picture books and fiction, and 1 holding a variety of Young Adult titles...many of which have Adult appeal! Thank you so much for supporting this wonderful literacy initiative, and we cannot wait to see you in the library this week! Please call (317)852-3167 option 2 with any questions, or e-mail us at askus@brownsburg.lib.in.us.
